Bringing together some of the best poets and performance artists in mid-Michigan since 1992, Burning Desires delivers hot words, music and performance to the stage each Valentine’s Day weekend.
Selected poet bios
Nick Tijerina is a well known poet at the Creole Gallery Old Town Poetry Association gigs, where his anti-intellectual, earthy humor is much appreciated. He was born eighth of ten children in a migrant crop worker family that turned “factory rat.” With two marriages and three children under his belt, he is currently celebrating 12 years of happy divorcedness. He has been a member of Lansing Poetry Club off and on since 2008.
Elaina Earl is a high school senior, musician and literature lover from DeWitt. She lives on a small non-working farm with her mother and three siblings.

I have loved these Valentine weekend poetry reads over the years …
Is it really wise to charge $10 admission to an event like this?
We want to encourage poetry, and it might be a bit pricey for some people to participate with this kind of admission charge, particularly young, elderly or the unemployed. In the past it was based on a donation or love offering, and that would seem to be a good way to continue.
I couldn’t be with you this day
the air fare is too much to pay
but in the interests of burning desire
this fellow from over in blighty
will set fire to his wife’s flame proof nighty
